Wright's Quarter Horses the Leading Breeder of the Year.
Smokum Oak is the sire of Smokums Prize and also Tinted
Smoke, who was the PCCHA Open Gelding Stakes Champion and
earner of $62,000. Smokum and Jazz was the 4th in the NRCHA
Non Pro Futurity, with earnings over $38,000. Smokums Miss
Doc Bar was the Non Pro Champion at the 1995 NRCHA
Championship Futurity. These are just a few of Smokum Oak's
foals that have excelled in working cow horse, reining and
cutting.
Smokum Oak’s lifetime earnings, with limited showing, exceed
$45,000. He is a Superior Reined Cow Horse. In the past 10
years, Smokum Oak has ranked among the top 5 leading sires
of money earners of reined cow horses. In 2000, Smokum Oak
was the second leading sire for reined cow horses and
Wright’s Quarter Horses was the Leading Breeder of the
Nation.
Smokum Oak started his limited show career in 1984 at the
World Championship Snaffle Bit Futurity in Reno, Nevada. He
was in the top ten in both the fence and reined work;
finishing 8th in the preliminaries out of 354 horses entered
and was 14th in the finals. He went from Reno to the Cow
Palace where he was Reserve Champion. From there he became
the Open Champion at the Southern Oregon Cow Horse Olympics.
In 1985, Smokum was Champion of the World Championship
Snaffle Bit Maturity and that fall won the Hackamore
Championship at the World Championship Snaffle Bit Futurity.
Smokum Oak’s foals have been champions in the working
cow horse, reining and cutting. Below is a sampling of some

Smokums Prize was the 2000 World Championship
Snaffle Bit Futurity Open Champion and the Non Pro Reserve
Champion. He was shown by his owner Shawn Renshaw in the Non
Pro finals and by Ted Robinson in the Open finals. He is the
highest earning 3 year old in the history of the NRCHA. In
2001, Prize was Non Pro Champion, Limited Open Champion and
tied 4th/5th in the Open at the NRCHA River Front Farms
Derby. His lifetime earnings are $217,000.
Smokum’s Pepper was shown by Eric Freitas in 1996 as
a three year old and was the leading three year old Reined
Cow Horse in the nation with earnings in excess of $80,000.
They were the 1996 NRCHA Year End Champions in the Non Pro
Hackamore. In 1995, Smokum’s Pepper was the Equistats-
Highest Earning Non Pro Futurity Horse and in 1997 was
chosen as AQHA America’s Best Hackamore Horse.
Smokums Miss Parrette and GiGi Gortner were the 1998
NRCHA Year End Champions in the non Pro Bridle, with
lifetime earnings over $35,000.
Smokum and Jazz, owned and ridden by Shawn Renshaw,
has lifetime earnings of over $40,000. They were the $5,000
Limited Champion at the 1997 NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity. In
1998, they were Reno Snaffle Bit Futurity Non Pro Hackamore
Champions, Top 5 in the 1998 Stallion Stakes and Reserve
Champion at the Del Mar Hackamore Classic. In 1998, they
were also Champion Hackamore Horse at Cow Palace and
Unlimited Champion at the Triple Crown.
Smokums Play Olena also ridden by Shawn Renshaw was
Reserve Champion at the Valley Cow Horse Classic Futurity in
1998, 3rd at Reno in the Hackamore and Top 5 at the Triple
Crown in the Hackamore, 1999 Top 5 at the NRCHA Stallion
Stakes. In 2000 he was the NRCHA Derby Amateur Champion,
2001 NRCHA Derby Ltd Non Pro Champion, shown by Jeff Wenig.
In 2002 Shawn Renshaw claimed the title of the Salinas Rodeo
Non Pro Bridle Championship.
Smokums Miss Doc Bar was owned and shown by Korie
Baker. They won the Non Pro Championship at the 1995 World
Championship Snaffle Bit Futurity.
Tinted Smoke was the 1990 PCCHA Open Gelding Stakes
Champion and the Reno Western Open Open Futurity Reserve
Champion. Tinted had NCHA earnings in excess of $60,000 and
is still being shown in cutting and reined cow horse
classes.
Mandy Mia Lena was the Open Champion at the 1989 Reno
Western Open Futurity, Open Finalist at the NRCHA Snaffle
Bit Futurity in 1989 and 1990 PCQHA Top 10 Jr Reining.
Miss Smokum Wyoming was the 1992 Idaho Reined Cow
Horse Non Pro Champion and Limited Open Champion. She was
also third in the Limited Open at the NRCHA Snaffle Bit
Futurity.
Dun Tuckered Out was the Non Pro Champion at the
Rancho Murrieta Reining Spectacular.
